Highlights from the 15th Gawad Buhay Awards 2025

The curtains rose, the lights dimmed, and once again, the magic of Philippine theater took center stage at the 15th Gawad Buhay Awards 2025, held in grand fashion at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Organized by Philstage, the country’s only alliance of professional performing arts companies, the prestigious awards night brought together the best and brightest of local theater for an evening of celebration, artistry, and recognition.

This year’s Gawad Buhay wasn't just a tribute to outstanding performances—it was a reflection of how far the industry has come. After years of pandemic disruptions, the vibrancy of live performance roared back to life, proving that theater remains a vital force in Philippine culture.

Topping this year’s nominations is Tanghalang Pilipino, with its critically acclaimed productions “Balete” and “Pingkian: Isang Musikal” dominating the list. Balete received 17 nominations, including Outstanding Play, Ensemble Performance, and multiple acting and design categories. Meanwhile, Pingkian followed closely with 16 nominations, making it a major contender for Outstanding Musical and Stage Direction.

Also making waves is Barefoot Theatre Collaborative’s “Bar Boys: A New Musical”, which earned 13 nominations, including nods for Best Musical, Outstanding Book, and Male Lead Performance for Alex Diaz and Benedix Ramos.

Repertory Philippines' production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” also stood out with 11 nominations, showcasing excellence in musical direction, set and costume design, and notable performances by Krystal Kane, Gabby Padilla, and Meliton Roxas Jr. in technical categories.

This year’s list features a healthy mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, with 43% of nominees being first-timers—a testament to the growing diversity and depth of talent in Philippine theater. From powerful dramatic performances to vibrant musical portrayals, the 2025 nominees set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable awards night.

From acting and directing to choreography, sound design, and lighting, every award at Gawad Buhay 2025 honored the tireless artistry behind each performance, reminding us that theater is a collaborative craft shaped by vision, discipline, and heart.
